Thoughts & Review on- Murder in Paharganj-A Vicks Menon Thriller by Kulpreet Yadav

Murder mysteries are always welcome. Whether they are divided into whodunit, howdunit or any other genre. After all murder is murder and mystery is mystery. Its a fascinating ride.

After finishing reading this book, i was instantly reminded of  Sudhir and Vinod who become impromptu investigative reporter when they stumble on a murder in the movie-Jaane bhi do yaaron. Of course, its a satire movie, a bit dark chasing evils more closer to the homeground.

Vicks Menon, an unemployed investigative reporter finds himself in a interesting murder case of a foreigner woman named Sherry Bing in a seedy, low-down Le yogi Deluxe hotel in Pahargunj, Delhi. Unfortunately the friend who passes him the information, gives away Vicks Menon's name when the police comes to investigate the murder.

Vicks menon, hot already on the murderer's trail sends a article about the murder to his former employer and gets the signal to go ahead and chase the killer. The killer, an Iranian national Jamie is a ruthless killer and doesn't stop at anything to impress his boss and the psyche of his ideology. Vicks Menon's chase leads him to the bylanes of Udaipur, Bangkok and finally Delhi.

What seems to be on a superficial mystery of a murdered woman  turns out actually to be a high profile case involving conspiracy and political enmity between Israel and Iran.

On a turn of events & a bit of fate at work, Vicks Menon also gets together with his former estranged girlfriend Tonya. She helps Vicks Menon in profiling the killer & the steps which led to the murder of the woman.

Vicks Menon turns out to be in the middle of a political storm and on the chase of ruthless killer who doesnt hesitiate to kill anyone including Vicks Menon. This is a racy read & till the end, it works to a good nail biting suspense thriller.

Vicks Menon seems to be an alert, investigative reporter one that reports the story & also tries to solve it. He sometimes tries to work out the angst within while dealing with his past. The chemistry between Tonya & Vicks Menon strikes a genuine chord to the reader.

The characters in the story who play an important part through out the story, are well defined and they don't feel stretched out or imagined. Be it ACP Rao, Ariel Miller the Israelean spy, Vicks Menon's father.

Kulpreet Yadav churns out an interensting pot boiler of a story. This is a well thought, well written although with some flaws in the book.  As a reader, I almost the felt the chill of Jamie as he went on nonchalantly carrying out his tasks.

To write a murder story mingled with spies, espionage, lies and love too requires a lot of detailing and hard work. As Indian writers in this genre, we have fewer writers who have gripped our attention. We do have our share of detectives, amateur reporters, housewife who turns detective, our homegrown and very much loved Byomkesh Bakshi. And in that same regard, Vicks Menon could be a favorite too.

Kulpreet Yadav has done a thorough research in bringing out the characters and the plot alive in this novel. Although as a reader at times, i did feel that the novel was a tad bit rushed upon & could have been slowed down with more sub plots and character stories.

This novel, has definitely spiked interest in me to read more novels written by Kulpreet Yadav and other investigative reporter stories by other authors too. I am strangely reminded of this novel "Ek raat ek laash" by Surender Mohan Pathak & a movie made in all 80's glory and gaudiness-Agent Vinod.

Don't miss out on this quick, enthralling read.
