Thoughts & Review on- The Shrine of Death by Divya Kumar

Summers are made for reading. Especially Mysteries & Thrillers. In a hot, sultry afternoon when I am dozing at work, the only things which keeps my brain cells alive is the tick tock of the clock to strike 5 & the anticipation of reading the thriller on the way to home. So when I got the opportunity to read The shrine of death by Divya Kumar, I knew I had to read it. It had all the perfect ingredients to make a perfect potpourri of a gripping thriller. Interesting Characters, catchy dialogues, urban legend of finding the stolen treasures &an unique story plot.

Prabha Sinha, an IT professional based in Chennai has recently quit her job in order to do something worthwhile with her life. Weighing between the heavy memories of her bohemian family & applying simultaneously for a new job, she receives a call from her long-lost friend Sneha Pillai. Sneha Seems to be in distress, but due to poor connection, the call is disconnected . Intrigued & Worried about Sneha, Prabha tries to find out about Sneha’s whereabouts & her life.

What happens therein, opens up a Pandora box in Prabha Sinha’s life. Prabha contacts Sneha’s former workplace-Chakra Art Gallery, where she gets the contact details of another employee of Chakra- a troubled, but gifted young man- Jai. Together, Jai &Prabha discover a murder and a crime scene where Sneha lived as a Paying Guest. An 80 year old lady is murdered & here is the point where the case of disapperence of Sneha gets a bit darker.

From here on, the story rides a fast pacing lane of twists and turns. Sneha Pillai is still missing & the mystery surrounding her into an ever growing labyrinth. Prabha Sinha, high on the adrenaline rush & emotions learns about the incomplete thesis by Sneha Pillai on Chola Queen and the myth surrounding the missing idols of Shiva, &Parvati. Prabha, along with aide of her friend & flat mate Charu, a journalist , Raiz an investigative reporter & jai uncover slowly the truth of the darker side of powerful money, ambitions, paintings and legends mixed with history.

Prabha is also introduced to DSP Gerard Ratnaraj of Idol Wing, whom she is instantly smitten by his powerful persona. Debut author Divya Kumar finely pens the irrestible chemistry between Prabha& Gerard. It is written with such passion, that I almost longed for DSP in my life too  . However in the midst of a blooming love story, tension & danger looms large. Prabha with her mini crew of DSP, reporter & Jai are set out to resolve this case.

The ending is definitely a nail biting one, which i will leave the readers to find it. Debut Author Divya Kumar pens a gripping tale of missing idols woven with mythology, murder, friendship, romance, thrill . It constitutes all the elements of a perfect thriller. Divya Kumar describes the chemistry between Prabha Sinha & her bohemian parents quite to the point. The essence of Chennai is well captured & the reader doesn't feel out of place. The sweet, caring and a bit bickering relationship between Prabha & her room mates Charu & Sonu comes across as a genuine friendship.

A special mention to Jai, a pivotal character in the novel, who is troubled, confused trying to understand his identity and his gift. His tormented past, his emotions as they unveil in the thriller are aptly described and can be a novel in itself.

I am waiting for the author to bring out more thrillers by this diverse trio of Prabha Sinha, Jai & DSP Gerard Ratnaraj.
